Geigenbaumeister Konrad Kohlert

Konrad Kohlert – education and career

I was born in Haguenau in 1957. As the son of an instrument maker, I discovered my love for this profession at an early age. At the age of 12, under the guidance of my father, I carved my first violin snails.

At the age of 15 I began my training with master violin maker Ernst-Heinrich Roth in Bubenreuth and at the violin making school in Mittenwald. After completing my apprenticeship in 1976 and working in my father's workshop for a few years, I passed my master's examination in Nuremberg in 1987. Since then I've been self-employed and run a workshop in Poxdorf (near Forchheim). I am a member of the Erlangen String and Plucked Instrument Makers' Guild and of the Association of German Violin Makers.

My focus is on building master violins, mainly based on models by Joseph Guarnerius del Gésu and Antonius Stradivarius. Furthermore I build violins after Gagliano, as well as baroque violins after Amati. Violas and cellos based on various models.
